BEARS History
Where it all began....to now and the future!
Bromsgrove Bears Basketball Club was formed in 2010 when sisters Dawn and Carys Hall decided that there needed to be more basketball accessible to all ages and genders throughout the Bromsgrove area and beyond. The club’s aims were simple: to get more people playing basketball and to improve the overall standard of basketball players in the area. Bromsgrove Bears has always developed its players giving them the skills and knowledge to progress within their basketball career. With our strong coaching staff, with more than 90 years of experience between them, we are producing strong players, some of whom have played for England, with others progressing to Europe and the United States as a result.
During the mid 2000’s the club focused on younger junior age groups within the Youth Basketball League, winning titles at under 13’s under 19’s and development Women. In 2019 Bromsgrove Bears was reconstituted and with unprecedented growth was able to field six teams ranging from under 9’s to both senior Men & Womens, the club had a very successful season developing many new players as well as welcoming back players from the previous season and indeed some who had played for the bears in the early years. The season was unfortunately cut short due to the Covid 19 pandemic with teams well placed to make the play offs as well as the women having progressed to the finals of the cup competition.
For 2020 we again are growing the club, with new coaches joining our existing established group we are once again able to field 6 teams in the Youth Basketball League and a further 4 teams in Basketball England’s National League. Our plans include developing player's talents in both their playing and understanding of the sport for some to become table officials & referees along with some senior players to become the coaches of the future. Bromsgrove Bears prides its self on being a family-friendly club staying true to the aims we had from the beginning of developing player's skills, talents & knowledge of Basketball ‘to be the best they can be’.
Team information
Whether you compete in the WNBA or NBA or in a local league in your hometown or city, we all love the game of basketball. You may be the best player on the team, or a beginner who is just learning the game, but either way, it’s fun to play. Though basketball is a team sport, it’s ultimately your responsibility to develop as a player and teammate. You must work hard — both on the court and off — to contribute to your team’s success.
Attend every practice, work on your game at home, and always think about what you need to do to improve. Regardless of whether your brother, sister, parent or friend shows you the ropes and teaches you the game, probably the most important person in your basketball world is the coach. Show your coach the utmost respect and look to him or her for guidance and direction. If you listen, work hard and honour the team concept, you will be well on your way to becoming a complete basketball player.
As a member of the team, you will experience both winning and losing. Try not to get too up or down based on the outcome of the game. It’s great to be happy after a win, but don’t brag about it or make fun of your opponent. And if you lose, don’t finger-point or complain about the coach, teammates or officials. Stay together and be a leader. As the saying goes, “you win as a team and you lose as a team.” If you can accomplish that, you will be considered a winner no matter what the outcome of the game.
There are teams for everyone both in development leagues and the national league, some players may get the opportunity to play for two teams within the club we will only change ONE amount of subscriptions for this, lots of opportunities to look forward to for the next season.
